Today we thank the Hon. David Littleproud MP and congratulate him for his service as Leader of the Federal Parliamentary Nationals.
David steps down from the leadership at a time of his choosing.
It is always challenging being a Party leader in Opposition, especially following almost a decade in office, but David has been a fierce and steadfast champion of the regions.
“From the time he was elected leader, David was jacket off, sleeves rolled up ready to get his hands dirty driving policy outcomes for his constituents and the Australian public.” Senator McKenzie said.
As leader, David led the Nationals as we opposed Labor’s divisive Voice Referendum. He fought for nuclear to be part of Australia’s energy mix, with the courage of being willing to host a facility in his electorate of Maranoa. And he stood up for farmers against the market power of the big supermarkets.
First elected as the Member for Maranoa in 2016 and subsequently re‑elected in 2019, 2022 and 2025, David has served his electorate and regional Australia with unwavering commitment.
His ministerial career has been marked by responsibility across some of the nation’s most demanding portfolios. From his initial elevation to Cabinet as Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources in 2017, through to his stewardship of the Agriculture, Northern Australia, Water Resources, Drought, Rural Finance, Natural Disaster and Emergency Management portfolios, David has been at the forefront of issues central to Australia’s economic strength and national resilience.
David played a key role in establishing the national Emergency Response Fund contributing to Australia’s preparedness and recovery capacity in the face of increasingly frequent natural disasters, and secured Parliamentary approval to establish the Regional Investment Corporation.
On behalf of colleagues, staff, and the many communities he has served, we congratulate David on his service and thank him for his enormous contribution to public life. His dedication, thoughtful leadership and deep respect for the people of regional Australia will leave a lasting legacy.
We wish David every success as he enters the next chapter of his career continuing to serve the people of Maranoa, knowing he departs the leadership with the gratitude and respect of those who have had the privilege of working alongside him.
