The Nationals Senator for Victoria and Patron Senator for Bendigo Bridget McKenzie has welcomed the start of Carers Week 2012 and thanked carers in central Victoria for the enormous contribution they make.
Carers Week 2012 is being held between Sunday 14 October and Saturday 20 October.
Senator McKenzie said there are over 2 million carers in Australia of all ages.
“Carers can be children, parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours who often dedicate 24 hours a day, seven days a week to looking after loved ones. These people are the unsung heroes of our community, who make an invaluable contribution to society.
“The parents and friends involved with the MASARG project in Castlemaine are an excellent example of the selfless dedication of carers.
“They are not only devoting their time to caring for their disabled children but are also trying to ensure their loved ones have somewhere to live when they can no longer care for them.”
The issue of ongoing care is reflected in the theme of Carers Week, “Be Care Aware”. It is important that carers are aware of the support services available to them in the community, as the commitment can often affect their health and wellbeing.
Senator McKenzie said without the dedication of Australia’s unpaid carers who provide support to family and friends with a disability, an illness or chronic condition, many Australians would not be able to continue living at home or participate in the community.
