The second Parliamentary Friends of Shooting event at Parliament House in Canberra will feature Olympic Gold Medal shooter Catherine Skinner and Olympian James Willett tonight.
Co-Chair, National’s Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said she is delighted that such eminent Olympic Shooters were attending the launch in Parliament House.
Gold medal winner in the Women’s Trap event at the Rio Olympics, Catherine Skinner is currently ranked Number One in the World in Trap Women while James Willett was a finalist in the Double Trap Men and is ranked 3rd in the world in Double Trap Men.
Senator McKenzie said the Friends of Shooting group is being constituted for a second parliamentary term with support right across Parliament from all political persuasions.
“There are over 800 thousand law abiding recreational shooters in Australia and many others who support responsible gun ownership in this country.
“Hunting and shooting delivers an incredible economic, environmental and social benefit to our community, particularly in regional areas, and the Parliamentary Friends of Shooting are keen to show our support.”.
Senator McKenzie said the goal of the group is to promote, educate and celebrate, particularly the achievements of Australian shooters at the Rio Olympics.
“We are keen that to ensure that the debate around safe and responsible gun ownership is based around evidence and facts, guided by the expectations and concerns of our communities.
The Rio Olympics highlighted this exciting sport and I am so pleased that Catherine and James are able to be with us to celebrate the launch tonight.
“I look forward to celebrating with them and to show our continuing support for their sport and the reactional pastime of so many fellow Australians,” Senator McKenzie said.
