The Towong, Wodonga, Alpine, Indigo, Wangaratta and Mansfield councils in Victoria will receive further bushfire recovery funding from a $17 million fund through The National Bushfire Recovery Agency.
Nationals Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said the extra funding ranging from $275,000 to $200,000 per council will help with the local recovery.
Under the latest $17 million fund, the councils will receive:
Council Latest round of funding Total bushfire recovery support received
Towong $275,000 $1,275,000
Wodonga $200,000 $200,000
Alpine $225,000 $1,225,000
Indigo $200,000 $200,000
Wangaratta $225,000 $225,000
Mansfield $200,000 $200,000
“People in these communities know what matters most to their region – it’s only fair they should decide how the money is spent,” Senator McKenzie said.
“The Federal Government has made this further funding available and the National Bushfire Recovery Agency made an independent decision of where the money should be allocated.
“The agency looked at a range of factors including population, disaster recovery payments already received, the area burnt and socio-economic factors of the council area.”
The councils where Category C assistance was activated as of 24 January 2020 were eligible for the funding. They can use it for rebuilding council infrastructure such roads, bridges and community facilities; refencing; and hosting activities that bring communities together.
“We are standing by our communities as they recover from the bushfires.”
