The Commonwealth Government will invest $5 million towards construction of a new runway at Bendigo Airport, The Nationals Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie announced today.
Senator McKenzie said the Commonwealth Government’s $5 million investment would support the Greater Bendigo City Council to deliver a $14.7 million upgrade of Bendigo Airport.
The investment will fund construction of a new runway to cater for aircraft capable of carrying up to 70 passengers, as well as upgrades to lighting, taxiways and associated infrastructure at Bendigo Airport.
“This investment will transform Bendigo Airport and recognises Bendigo’s position as one of Victoria’s most important regional centres,” Senator McKenzie said.
“The major upgrade has been among the City of Greater Bendigo's most important current projects and one we are proud to support.
“This project will help grow business development and attraction and create better air links between Bendigo, Melbourne and other major regional centres.
“It will also provide better access for emergency and medical aircraft coming in and out of Bendigo.
“I am thrilled we have been able to secure this $5 million investment for Bendigo and it reaffirms the Coalition Government’s commitment to the region.”
Senator McKenzie said the $5 million investment would be provided through the Coalition Government’s $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund.
“The Nationals fought hard to secure the $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund so we could deliver key local infrastructure projects such as this in regional and rural communities,” Senator McKenzie said.
“A total of 51 priority infrastructure projects have been funded nationwide through Round One of the National Stronger Regions Fund – a great outcome.”
