Victorian Government-commissioned economic modelling has confirmed that Julia Gillard’s carbon tax will be bad for Victoria and cost thousands of jobs across the State.
The Nationals Senator for Victoria, Bridget McKenzie, said this today following a State Government survey across 80 Local Government regions.
“This economic analysis has confirmed that the Labor-Greens carbon tax will hit Victoria hard, destroy jobs and increase the cost of living pressures on families,” Senator McKenzie said.
“The Victorian Government-commissioned modelling confirms that 498 jobs will be lost in the Greater Bendigo region in 2015, with another 182 jobs to go by 2020.
It shows that Julia Gillard’s carbon tax will cost a total of 23,000 jobs across Victoria. The Victorian economy will be $2.8 billion worse off by 2015 and $3 billion worse off in 2030,” Senator McKenzie said.
“Julia Gillard’s carbon tax is going to raise the cost of living for Victorian families, weaken the reliability of our power supplies, hurt the Victorian economy and – as this modelling confirms – destroy Victorian jobs.”
“Six days prior to the last election, Julia Gillard said “there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead”. The day before the election she said: “I rule out a carbon tax”. The Australian people deserve a say on the carbon tax. It should not be introduced before the next election,” Senator McKenzie said.
“It is a great big new tax on everything, and every year it will go up and up and up. The carbon tax will also impose a heavy cost on local industries, force businesses to close and put people out of work.”
Senator McKenzie said Victorians will pay more for everything under Julia Gillard’s carbon tax – the biggest and most punitive carbon tax in the world.
“She said the Coalition’s commitment to the Victorian people is that we will do everything in our power to fight this toxic tax. The Coalition will oppose it in opposition and rescind it in Government.
