The Nationals Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said nine days out from the world’s biggest carbon tax the government has no answers for central Victoria.
Senator McKenzie used Question Time yesterday to push for government plans on the Regional Structural Adjustment Assistance program compensation, but it couldn’t confirm financial support.
“Modelling by Deloitte Access Economics shows that the carbon tax is going to hit regional Victoria hard, and shows it will cost over 900 jobs in the Bendigo area.
“If this is not justification for a regional assistance package, what is?”
Senator McKenzie said the government’s negligence on the issues faced by regional Victorians proved how out of touch it was.
“Victoria’s electricity and gas retailers have all increased their rates for the next financial year, with the carbon tax contributing to the significant price rises.
“Power prices for some customers are increasing by up to 14% for both electricity and gas.
“Every time you turn on the light, switch on the heater or plug in the computer, you will be paying the carbon tax.
“The carbon tax will serve as a wrecking ball to Bendigo’s economy.”
