Sporting Schools Program Breaks Record For Getting Kids Moving

The Liberal and Nationals Government’s Sporting Schools program is helping more schools than ever before provide opportunities for children to get active and experience the joy of sport.

Grants for Term 1, 2020 opened on November 11 and close soon.

Next year there will be 35 sports for children to choose from, with the inclusion of judo and paddle sports.

Nationals Senator for Victoria, Bridget McKenzie, encouraged schools in rural and regional Victoria to register for Sporting Schools and join the millions of Australian children benefitting from fun and free opportunities to get active.

“The Sporting Schools program can be an important first step to inspiring children to develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity,” she said.

“Many schools across country Victoria have been part of the program already and we want to see as many children as possible enjoying the benefits it can provide.

“With 88 per cent of schools around the country engaged with the program now is a great time to get involved, so I encourage eligible schools throughout the great state of Victoria to apply for Term 1, 2020 grants.”

Minister for Youth and Sport, Richard Colbeck, said it was important to get Australian kids more active, more often so they can benefit from the social connection and development sport provides.

“Physical activity helps keep children healthy, happy and socially engaged, impacting positively on their intellectual capacity and academic achievements,” he said.

Sporting Schools is about developing children’s love of sport from a young age, helping to increase their confidence and capability to be active for life.

“The Government’s national sporting funding body, Sport Australia, works in partnership with now 35 national sporting organisations to deliver this program nation-wide and provide a great experience for Aussie kids.”

Grant applications for Sporting Schools Term 1, 2020 close on Friday, November 22.
